Why students struggle with timed tests: a perspective from a SAT / IELTS tutor (and how to fix it)

Many SAT and IELTS students know the content but still run out of time. This usually comes down to habits, not ability.

Here’s what I see most often:

They spend too long on the first questions.

Trying to be perfect early on leads to rushing later. I teach students to keep moving and return to tricky ones if there’s time.

They read too much.

In reading sections, they often try to understand every word. I train them to skim for structure and scan for answers.

They over-edit their writing.

Some get stuck rewriting every sentence. We practise planning quickly, writing a full draft, and editing only at the end.

They rarely practise under pressure.

Doing untimed homework doesn’t build real exam stamina. I use timed drills and review what caused delays.

When students learn better strategies, timing improves. Confidence builds. Results follow.

If this sounds familiar, feel free to get in touch. I’m always happy to help.
